Takeaways from “The Sell” by Fredrik Eklund

Last year I moved to New York City for six months. Right before going, I started watching "Million Dollar Listing New York". The exquisite apartments, gorgeous views and charm of the city looked so appealing. I knew my experience would be different, and trust me, it was. My apartment was cute but living in NYC isn't all glitz and glamour. The first week I was living there, a rat ran across my kitchen floor. When I called the landlord, he said "it's Saturday and it's not an emergency. We can have someone come look on Monday." I was also told it was "normal" to have rats and cockroaches. My building was on the upper east side and it was a 15 minute walk to the nearest subway. Once I got home, I was on the sixth floor of a six story walk up. There was no laundry in my building so I would put my clothes in my roller bag and haul it up and down the stairs and down a few blocks to the laundromat. For groceries, I could only carry what I could hold in my two hands. The things in life I used to take for granted quickly became apparent and I did not have those luxuries anymore.

 

I digress. This is not a blog about my time in New York City, this is the wonderful things I have learned from one of the brokers on “Million Dollar Listing New York”, Fredrik Eklund. He recently wrote a book called “The Sell” and I’m loving every minute of it. He is a dashing, quirky man who I instantly thought I’d love to be best friends with. My goal was to meet him when I moved; I didn’t but one day I hope to. The subtitle of his book is “The Secrets of Selling Anything to Anyone”. I’m currently half-way through the book and have underlined, starred and soaked in many things. Here are a few of my biggest take aways:

“Take note: The number one mistake you can make is watering down your true self because you’re afraid others can’t handle the 100-proof you.”

 

“Whatever your business attire, remember this: Business attire is by nature a conservative statement in and of itself. So, why make it doubly conservative? Are you conservative squared? No! You’re conservative times fabulous. You’re a high-kicker!”

 

“You, my high-kicker, want to be remembered for being the person who brightens the mood in the room. Truly successful people are happy (I’m not talking about money!), and only people who love what they do are truly happy.”

 

"It's time for you to ask for what you want and get it."

 

Fredrik is charming and goofy at the same time. He speaks about being the authentic you and you will attract the people you want in your life. In his schedule, he makes time for his family, travel, fitness and faith. All things I agree with and better your life. I’m looking forward to reading the second half of the book and I’d suggest reading it/watching the show. It’s all entertaining!
